Before we continue, I want to express my gratitude to those whose leadership, partnership, and support helped to make moments like this possible.” – Dr. Jermaine F. 90
The ceremony featured several speakers and administrators, including Montgomery College president Dr. Jermaine F. 92
Chair of the Board of Trustees Gloria Aparicio Blackwell also addressed attendees during the ceremony. Blackwell, a Venezuela native who enrolled at Montgomery College in 1986, delivered the ceremony’s acknowledgment of Indigenous land and emphasized the importance of inclusion and representation, specifically recognizing the Piscataway and Conoy peoples.

93
Throughout the ceremony, speakers repeatedly emphasized perseverance, opportunity, and community. Many graduates reached commencement while balancing employment, financial hardship, family responsibilities, and long commutes throughout the school year.

94

95
One of the ceremony’s more noticeable aspects was the diversity present both onstage and in the audience. Graduates represented a wide range of cultures, age groups, and academic backgrounds, something that has long distinguished Montgomery College’s student body.

116

I recently attended an etiquette dinner at Montgomery College, and I wanted to share a few helpful takeaways—especially for situations like networking lunches or working interviews.

117
The meal was prepared by the hospitality school with assistance from the operations managers. It was served at the Rockville campus in the faculty lounge. Students and staff from several locations.

118
One thing I learned is to pay attention to what others are ordering and try to stay within a similar price range. It helps you come across as thoughtful and aware of the setting.

119
There was also a simple trick called “BMW” to remember table settings:

120
– Bread plate is on the left
121– Meal (main plate) is in the center
122– Water glass is on the right

123
Another important tip is how to signal that you’re finished eating: place your fork and knife parallel to each other on the plate. It’s a small detail, but it shows awareness of dining etiquette.

124
Overall, the experience was really helpful in understanding how to feel more confident and polished in professional dining settings.

125
Hope these tips are useful!

147

On April 2, the Key of David Christian Center campus preached near the Theatre Arts Building (TA) at Montgomery College Rockville campus; the Key of David Christian Center is a non-denominational Christian church that currently meets in western parts of Philadelphia. They are known for their controversial statements and for preaching on college campuses, led by Pastor Aden Rusfeldt and his family. With just one Google search, Pastor Aden Rusfeldt’s name is tied to many contentious protests, some of which led to lawsuits like Rusfeldt v. City of New York.

149
Some of the provocative signs held by the group stated claims such as: “Not a virgin + Not married = Whore”, “Women belong in the kitchen, a list of A-listers in hell, along with a list of groups who “will burn in hell”, e.g., Muslims, women cops, and the Pope.

150

151
The group verbally harassed students whom they felt were not following their holy path of Christianity. Students who were continuously harassed by the group were primarily members of the LGBTQ+ community and non-Christians.

152

153
Students questioned the group about their beliefs, fact-checked any biblical or religious claims, and stood up against harassment towards their fellow students. While many observed from a safe distance, a few students counter-protested, and others yelled at the group, either in response to the group’s remarks or to draw attention away from them.

154

155
John Robert Mahoney and Donovan Brown were two of the standout counter-protesters against the group. Mahoney silently protested with their body after many homophobic remarks against the LGBTQ+ community by Pastor Rusfeldt. Brown counter-protested by creating his own poster at the scene, stating “God loves everyone” and “Men=Women; Be Kind; Get a job.”

157
Because Donovan Brown protested near Pastor Rusfeldt and his family, Public Safety escorted him out. After a while, Brown was seen again, counter-protesting behind the group.

159

160
At around 3 p.m, the campus preach led by Pastor Rusfeldt ended, and the crowd of students dispersed. Questions against Public Safety were raised by students as to why no action was taken, while the group activity harassed students. For instance, one anonymous student quoted, “Why are [Public Safety] telling us to stay away?” after Donovan Brown was told to step back from Pastor Rusfeldt and his family.

161

162
Students did not know what the protocols were during the incident, and only witnessed Public Safety telling them to keep a safe distance from the group. This only deepened questions like how Public Safety could allow such groups to enter Montgomery College campuses in the first place.

163

164
On May 5, Vice President for Public Safety, Health & Emergency Management, Chief of Campus Police, Public Safety, Health, and Emergency Management, Adam Reid, and Manager for the Public Safety office at the Rockville campus, Robert Mueck, spoke at the ICC meeting held in the SV building to answer some questions.

165

166
Reid’s response was “The core frame here is this is all protected activity under the First Amendment. With that being said, no one is a captive audience, where no one is being forced to hold there.”

167

168
Mueck claims that because Montgomery College is a public institution, Public Safety is unable to do anything due to the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and assembly. During the meeting, Mueck mentioned an email received by Public Safety from the group stating their “intentions, and what they were going to do.” If Public Safety had turned Pastor Rusfeldt and his family away, they would have taken legal action and sued the college for denying them their First Amendment rights; the group stated this in their email, as Mueck stated.

169

170
Pastor Rusfeldt mentions this approach of preaching the gospel in his book, “Open Air Fire: Principles of Open Air Outreach.” In this book, Pastor Rusfeldt encourages his supporters and others with similar mindsets to preach Christianity in public areas and offers practical guidance. Through this book, Pastor Rusfeldt provides insight into his beliefs and argues that his style of preaching is more effective than passive preaching.

171

172
Browsing the Key Of David Christian Church General Statement of Faith, they also mention their distaste for being a 501(c)(3). Many churches in the US are filed as non-profits, where they get their money from donations. However, as mentioned earlier and again by Reid during the ICC meeting, “They make their money by suing institutions for violations of First Amendment rights.” Hence, their appearance on our campus.

173

174
Many also wondered if this is something that could happen again, and the definite answer is yes. Mueck stated, “They liked the interactions so much that day that as they were leaving, they told us they were going to be back.”

175

176
Mueck continued, claiming that the group and their church mainly target college campuses, going up and down the East Coast to protest and harass
176students. Mueck mentioned that they have agreed with our Public Safety to give a 24-hour notice before they come back.

177

178
Something that piqued students’ interest was whether this was considered an obstruction of learning, as the Maryland Education Code §26-101 protects schools and colleges from protests like these on campus. According to Reid, “They were on a grassy area. They were not impeding anyone’s access. They were not in the buildings.” This means there is no real obstruction of education as they weren’t in anyone’s way, and were not a part of the prevention of going to class.

179

180
As the semester comes to a close, it is not likely we will see this group again. However, as they have stated, they will be back. With that being said, further questions and concerns can be directed to our Public Safety at MC, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

182
Disclaimer

183

184
All April 2, 2026 moments and events mentioned herein occurred between 2 p.m and 3 p.m. The Key of David Christian Center arrived at Montgomery College before noon; nothing from their arrival till 2 p.m. is covered in this article due to the absence of a student reporter at the scene.

185

186
Furthermore, Farahnaaz Qaderi, the Advocate staffer at the scene, was verbally harassed during this protest by Pastor Rusfeldt for debunking his comments against the acceptability of abuse towards women in Islam. Pastor Rusfeldt was recorded saying to Farahnaaz Qaderi, “Are you Muslim? You know why you say it’s not true if you’re Muslim ‘cause your man would’ve [hit] you in the face if you respond.”

214
Hail Mary Plot: Science teacher Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, wakes up on a ship with his teammates dead. He also makes a new friend named Rocky, a rock-themed alien whose planet was destroyed by the Astrophage.

216
Review: While Hoppers was decently good, Hail Mary was the best movie of 2026!

217

218
Hoppers Review: The concept was good. Mabel is a likable protagonist, and her passion for animals is why she has a grudge against the human antagonist, Jerry. Titus was a decent antagonist, as his mom was killed, and he was originally a caterpillar transformed into a butterfly. James Franco does a solid job voicing him. Other good characters include King George, C
218onner, and Diane. The human antagonist, Jerry, was very lame in this film, as all we see is him wanting to replace the environment. Anyways, the music was good, the animation was pretty solid, and the writing was okay. This was not close to Inside Out 2, but it was still a decent film. Quote from Siena Stronach, a friend of mine: “I don’t have a favorite quote particularly, but I like the plot of working together.” 6/10

219

220
Hail Mary Review: Ryan Gosling brings life to his protagonist, Ryland Grace, who was originally a science teacher before being chosen for a top-secret assignment. The alien Rocky was very cute, and he feels like a throwback to E.T. The ending was also very emotional. This is one of the two-to-three-hour films that works very well, though not every movie with a two-to-three-hour runtime can be good. Some of the best long films include The Lord of the Rings and Avengers: Endgame. Scooter Westman, an MC student from Germantown, gave the film a 9.3 out of 10 and said, “Hail Mary started out a little slow, mysterious, and funny at the beginning, but as the story progresses, it becomes much more engaging. When we see Grace befriend Rocky the alien, the movie really starts to shine, bringing more heart, excitement, and emotional depth to the story.” The direction by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller is very good, and the music is very emotional. This film gets a 10/10!

Joining them on the tour package are rockin’ Kentucky macabre masters Savage Master and DC death/thrash heavyweights Desolus.

286

287
Although many, including myself, were there to thrash along with the west coast metal warriors, it was a special and exemplary night for the local DMV scene. The newly formed metalpunk quartet Devilust opened and played their first show to the accolades of the “denim & leather” crowd, showcasing that the scene is still thriving with new talented bands. Total Maniac, from Baltimore, was celebrating the release of their second record “Love Overdrive” and DC’s Desolus are a part of the tour package and driving up fierce anticipation for their forthcoming sophomore record.

288

289
Devilust starts the mayhem!

290
Devilust opened the show and did not draw back any punches. “WE ARE DEVILUST” the lead singer announced in his jagged voice. The feedback of the guitars enveloped the room, and they kicked into a pounding Discharge-style riff. Not even a minute into their set, and a mosh pit broke out, a stamp of approval from metalheads. They breezed through five blackened metalpunk tunes e
290choing the same rotten sentiment of the first couple Venom records, ending their set with a cover of the English trio’s legendary track “Angel Dust”. The music sounds promising, and the band showcased a solid level of musicianship, especially for their debut gig.

291

292

293
Total Maniac keeps the momentum going.

294
Total Maniac assumed the stage next, and as mentioned before, were celebrating the release of their sophomore record “Love Overdrive” that night. Sunglasses and alcoholic seltzers galore, Total Maniac turned the “lust, filth, and sleaze” factor to eleven with aptly titled songs such as “Drinkin’ Our Way to Hell” and “Love Overdrive”. In an ironic twist, it was after “Drinkin’ Our Way to Hell” in which a 12-pack of Miller Lite made its way to the stage, and the boys began distributing the drinks among themselves. As for the empty box? An audience member championed the box on their head as they ran among the others in the mosh pit. Lead singer Diamond Dustin is a “total maniac”, as the band name would suggest, in the nicest way possible. His rough and unrestrained shrieks and vocals complimented the dingy back-alley blues leads of guitarists Micheal Brown and Nick Etson. While the rock n’ roll rhythm swagger was handled by bassist Ben Martin and drummer Vaughn Volkman. The entire vibe of the band was captured in a single sentence shouted by Diamond Dustin at the end of the set, “We’re Total Maniac, **** you!”.

295

296
The band provided a fun lovin’ good time for the “beer drinkers & hell raisers” in the audience but coming out of it none of the songs really stuck with me.

297

298

299
Hometown heroes “Desolus” crushed their debut performance as a four piece.

300
The venue was really starting to fill up by the time Desolus hit the stage, and pure excitement was in the air. This was another special set for many reasons. Firstly, this was their debut show on home turf as a four-piece, with former drummer Travis Stone having moved to second guitar and touring drummer Bileh Dougsiyeh now behind the kit permanently. In addition to this, the band had announced their upcoming album “Dwellers of The Twilight Void” and released an accompanying single a couple of days prior, which was featured in the set along with other new material. Furthermore, it was the opening date of the tour they were doing with Savage Master and Hirax. Desolus never fails to get the crowd going, especially in their hometown, and this time it was no different. It is a pleasure to see their growth as musicians and performers each time I catch them live. Having seen them as a three-piece previously, the “addition” of Travis Stone on second guitar makes an enormous impact on their sound. The riffs are more crushing and punishing on the ear, and the sound is fuller building the hellish atmosphere they aim for, that and the crimson red stage lights (you will never see Desolus under vibrant neon lights). The new songs displayed an evolution in their songwriting, toying with more dynamics and slightly more intricate song structures. “System Shock” and “From Man to Machine” are Desolus classics at this point and had the crowd shouting the choruses back at them. I’d say Desolus had a big part in my sore neck the following morning, which means they did great!

301

302

303
Savage Master excites the audience with a ghastly stage show and performance.

304
Savage Master played to a nearly sold-out audience and gave them the stage show of their weirdest, most twisted, and campy horror dreams. Coffins, candelabras, chalices, chains, blood, whips, daggers and how about a band dressed in medieval executioner’s hoods and a walk-on devil mascot to round it all off. All of these are the core of a Savage Master show. Musically, I’m not a big fan of the band; it is insanely generic traditional heavy metal that doesn’t have the songwriting prowess to compensate for its lack of originality. That being said, it lends itself well as a soundtrack to the magnificent stage show they put on. Who has time to worry about hooks and song structure when lead singer Stacey Savage is holding a dagger to the guitar player’s neck? The audience appeared to love every second of it and begrudgingly I gave into tapping my toe a bit. Stacey Savage and the faceless band carry so much conviction it makes you forget about the music and more concerned with what antics they’ll pull on stage next. The heavily theatric show contrasted the more stripped-downvibe of the night nicely, and Savage Master proved themselves a dramatic force to be reckoned with.

308
Before Hirax reached the stage, I was a bit worried as to how they would maintain the energy level of a crowd that had been non-stop thrashing for close to four hours at that point. As soon as they kicked into their opening track “Hellion Rising” any doubt I had disappeared. My fears were wiped off the face of the earth as soon as Hirax vocalist Katon W. De Pena launched himself into the crowd.

310
The setlist comprised about twenty songs spanning over 40 years of music, six studio albums, and countless singles and EPs. It had a healthy blend of all eras of the band and left the audience fulfilled.

The rest of the band exerted extreme technical skill keeping up with the breakneck speeds of a lot of Hirax songs.

316
Hirax, and specifically lead singer Katon W. De Pena, has a deep appreciation for the city of Baltimore which he let the audience know multiple times during the set and after as well. I’ve been at the last two shows Hiraxhas played in the area, and it is very apparent that the feeling is mutual. The crowd goe
316s absolutely electric in the presence of the thrash heroes.

317

318
The beauty of seeing Hirax live is their spontaneous nature. You never really know what you’re going to get. There is a focus on crowd interaction and crowd dynamics which influence what songs they choose to play, or in Baltimore’s case “creating” a song on the spot which is promised to be on a future Hirax release!

321
Hirax are not only tight musicians who have rocked with the best past and present, but they are the most loveable bunch of thrashers and chaotically fun live band I have seen to date. They emphasize that there is no barrier between band and audience, and they made it known multiple times throughout the night. Fist bumping the crowd any chance there was, letting fans hop on stage, and constant bursts of conversation between songs in the set. It’s a refreshing take in a world of musicians who take themselves too seriously, sometimes lacking the talent in between. I’ll leave this review with an anecdote which captures the honorary relationship between the band and its fans.

322

323
The mosh pit is in full throttle; bodies are being flung left and right, and Katon, before the next song starts, makes a declaration of war. “Anybody who wants to come up on this stage, go ahead and do that ****” he exclaimed. Hirax kicks into “The Plague” and droves of thrashers begin rushing the stage, letting the audience decide their fate. The song begins its riff break, spotlighting the guitar to drive up momentum. Hirax guitar player Jeremy Perez lines himself up, starts to play, and then…silence. A fan accidentally cut the sound of the guitar while up on the stage. The audience and band were left confused for a couple seconds while they tried to figure out what happened. The fan was noticeably shaken, and venue staff were slowly approaching the stage to kick him out. It was at that moment Katon stopped the venue staff and after the song’s completion stated, “we love that ****…you guys gotta entertain us back y’know”. He interacted with that fan multiple times throughout the night, reassuring him and the crowd that the band appreciates that type of energy.

325
Verdict

326
Hirax proved themselves once again as an unstoppable force on stages everywhere and anywhere even 40 years into their career, and the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) music scene had an exceptional night, pinning itself as one of the strongest local music scenes in the United States.
