1with our team, Microsoft entrusted us to bring PowerToys back. We had to create a version compatible with Windows 10 and newer systems and ensure its stability. This project is vital for Microsoft as it allows them to test and polish features for new Windows releases. \n\nFirst, we planned to build the Shortcut Guide module. As we progressed, we broadened our scope to modules like FancyZones and PowerToys Run. In addition, our role involved setting priorities for issues after each new release, reviewing code contributions from the community, and addressing their special requests. \n\nThe development of FancyZones came with its fair share of technical obstacles, especially when dealing with different monitor setups. Some users have identical monitors with the same ID model name, and the monitor manufacturers sometimes donât provide a unique identifier for each screen. This made it difficult to distinguish between screens, especially when users typically want to set up different zones per screen. \n\nWe solved this problem with several iterations. Our team ensured that the custom window layouts remained as users set them, even when they connected or disconnected monitors, restarted their computers, or locked their screens. \n\nOn top of that, we helped develop and integrate Command Palette â a new iteration of PowerToys Run. While PowerToys Run was originally based on the open-source launcher Wox, Command Palette is its recently launched successor, allowing users to execute various commands and enhance functionality through plugins. \n\nOverall, our team achieved a stable experience across user environments and helped deliver around 30 modules during our cooperation with Microsoft. \n\n## Managing High-Volume Community Engagement\n\nRunning an open-source project means we constantly receive feedback from the community. Users find bugs, suggest new features, and contribute their own code. Therefore, the open-source nature adds a social aspect to this project, which calls for just as much attention as the technical side of PowerToys. \n\n## Early Adoption of Microsoft UI Frameworks\n\nIn addition, we had the opportunity to work with Microsoft's newest UI frameworks, which was an exciting yet challenging task. Since these frameworks were still in active development, we had to adapt to their evolving specifications and features and think outside the box. \n\nThis was a win-win situation, since we also provided detailed feedback on issues we faced and improved their frameworks with some fixes, streamlining the development process. \n\n## Maintaining Accessibility\n\nMicrosoft demands excellent accessibility in all their products, and we put serious efforts to ensure PowerToys performs well for everyone. Accessibility problems received different priority tags, and \"priority one\" were the most urgent and needed immediate fixes. This made us integrate accessibility thinking into our development process, which significantly helped us introduce accessible solutions on time. However, as the project became more popular, the overall volume of issues exceeded our capacity to manage them as effectively as before, causing the need to prioritize which ones to answer and solve first. \n\n## Influence on Windows Native Feature Development\n\nPowerToys has had a direct influence on the Windows native feature development. Microsoft now treats it as a live testing ground for potential new functionality. They can monitor how users interact with PowerToys and collect performance data to determine which ideas are worth integrating into Windows. A great example is FancyZones. Microsoft incorporated similar window management features directly into Windows 11. \n\n## Semantic Kernel Feature Integration\n\nSemantic Kernel employs OpenAI models to generate chains of transformations to the clipboard based on user input. Our engineers led the integration of the Semantic Kernel feature into the Advanced Paste tool, introducing generative AI capabilities on Windows. \n\n## Becoming Microsoft's Reliable Partner\n\nThe outcome of this project that matters particularly for our team is the strong partnership weâve built with Microsoft. We enabled transitions between charging, low battery, and standby mode that conserves power during periods of inactivity. \n\nOur engineers also worked on extending battery lifespan and optimizing power usage for on-device data processing. For example, we implemented input current control based on temperature readings. This functionality adjusts the charging current depending on the thermal state of the device, helping to prevent overheating and optimize battery health. \n\n## Edge Data Processing\n\nWe developed a code generation script that converts Python code into C++ output capable of running on the device. This script autogenerates proper class structures to integrate with C++ without external tools, enabling real-time analysis while maintaining the device's processing constraints. \n\n\n\n## Data Management\n\nOur team established pipelines for accurate data transfers to Azure for analysis. We ensured that data collected by the Novoscope was correctly formatted and transmitted to the cloud, maintaining data integrity and compatibility with scripts and troubleshooting. \n\n## Streamlined Network Setup\n\nJanea Systems engineers created a captive portal and dynamic network configuration that streamlined network setup. Users put the device into access point mode, then use a mobile phone to select and connect Novoscope to one of the available networks. The implementation involved an HTTP server and an HTML page to display available networks and allow connection. Also, this feature required device-side changes such as switching to AP mode and returning to Wi-Fi mode, while displaying these states in the GUI. \n\n## Resonant Frequency Detection\n\nAnother valuable contribution was the detection of the device's resonant frequency for optimized operation. Our engineering team implemented a test mode that stimulates the device with a pulse and then applies a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis to determine amplitude and resonant frequency. \n\nThis feature spans all layers of the system, from low-level data collection to visualization in the GUI. To ensure accuracy, we ran unit and integration tests and validated the results against data from the OtoNexus research team. \n\n## Testing \u0026 Infrastructure Automation\n\nOur engineers ramped up and evolved the testing framework with functional and unit test scripts, automated quality checks, and set up a CI pipeline for rapid feedback and early regression detection. The CI automated test execution, integrated code coverage tools, and enforced mandatory quality thresholds before merging any code. Additionally, we supported complex debugging across the entire test suite to maintain reliability and accelerate development cycles. \n\nFor performance-critical features like edge data processing, device motion detection, and resonant frequency detection, we performed end-to-end unit/integration testing.
