Perhaps their most dominant record is the 183-game win streak against Southwest Conference opponents. For twelve years (1978-1990), the Longhorns didnât lose a single conference game. During that stretch, they won the 1986 NCAA national championship and recorded the first-ever undefeated season in collegiate womenâs basketball (34-0). Under Conradt, the team reached the Final Four again in 1987 and once more in 2003. Conradt also served as the head coach of the US Womenâs National Team and won the gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games, the teamâs first title since 1963.

Conradt was the first womenâs basketball coach to reach 700 career wins. She achieved her 800th win on January 22, 2003, against Texas Tech University, and her 900th win on March 6, 2007, against the University of Missouri. At the time of Conradtâs retirement, only Pat Summit (University of Tennessee) had more career wins as a head coachâin both menâs and womenâs college basketball history. Twenty-eight of her players went on to professional basketball careers, four were US Olympians, and almost every single one of her players graduated. Two long, antique walnut tables provide ample space for students and researchers to work. The remainder of the room is decorated with a treasure trove of art and artifacts from the Stark Centerâs collections.

Along the windowed north-facing wall are three statues from the Battle Cast Collection, on loan from the Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas. First in the lineup is The Idolino, a physique study of a young male athlete. At the center, Dionysus reclines on his panther pelt, taken from the East Pediment of the Parthenon. Though missing his hands and feet, Dionysus is the most intact figure on the East Pediment; however, he is also commonly identified as Hercules on a lion skin. The Discobolus, a discus thrower, stands at the west end of the windows. The huntress, Artemis, posing with a stag, was added later and placed on the darker accent wall at the far end of the room. The statues date from the late 1890s and the first two decades of the 20th century and were purchased by Dr. William Battle of UTâs Classics Department. Mounted on our lobby walls, the original installation included 11 black-and-white photographs of icons who impacted the fitness community along with wall and door murals of Abbye âPudgyâ Stockton, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bernarr Macfadden, founder of Physical Culture magazine. Following the death of weightlifter Tommy Kono in 2016, The Stark Center decided to add the International Weightlifting Federationsâ âLifter of the Centuryâ to our Wall of Icons. Adding Kono led us to then think about other men and women who also deserve recognition; therefore, in the fall of 2022, we moved the exhibit to this hallway so that we may continue to add more heroes and innovators from the world of strength and physical culture. When, as a doctoral student, Terry Todd searched for documentation on resistance training in the United States, he found it only in the hands of private collectors. The major U.S. research libraries held virtually nothing. Relying on the generosity and knowledge of those private collectors, Terry finished his dissertation and vowed to help those collectors establish a permanent, stable and safe environment for their collections. The Stark Center is the fulfillment of that promise.

The Stark Centerâs rich and diverse collections reflect the passion each collector brought to his or her library. The collections also reflect our determination to spotlight the concept of âphysical cultureâ which we define as various activities people have employed over the centuries to strengthen their bodies, enhance their physiques, increase their endurance, improve their health, fight against aging, and become better athletes. It is an all-encompassing phrase meant to illustrate the complexity of human well-being.

Above all, the Stark Center is a comprehensive library devoted to collecting and preserving the words of physical culturists, strongmen, naturopaths, weight lifters, and historians. The library is composed of the books and magazines gathered by many collectors over many years. Together, these collections represent the largest single library committed to the field. Book material has been given standard library cataloging; our holdings are reflected in most national and international library reference/research tools. In 2015, Dr. Ivy and five elite athletesâNFL quarterback Peyton Manning, triathlete Hunter Kemper, NBA center Kevin Garnett, gold medal-winning decathlete Bryan Clay, and MLB first baseman Albert Pujolsâworked together to redevelop the iconic, âBreakfast of Champions,â Wheaties cereal. The result was a special edition known as Wheaties Fuel, the packaging is seen here. The new formula was developed with the goal of fueling athletic performance by leaving out folic acid and adding vitamin E to itâs pre-existing whole grain formula that features 100% of the daily value of five B-vitamins. Dr. Ivy and the athletes were all heavily involved in developing every facet of the cereal down to three prototypes which were then distributed as samples and voted on to determine a winning final product.
