It’s got Hubble’s mirror size but a field of view 100x wider, and it’ll spend the next several years hunting exoplanets and digging into dark energy.</p><p>Turns out it’s also getting drafted into planetary defense. Roman’s wide field of view means it’ll pick up near-Earth asteroids as a byproduct of its regular sky surveys, and its resolution is sharp enough to nail down size, shape, and orbit — the stuff that actually matters for figuring out if a rock is dangerous. It’ll work alongside Vera Rubin and the upcoming NEO Surveyor to fill in the gaps ground telescopes miss, including asteroids hiding in the sun’s glare.</p><p>No official date for first images yet. Roman still has to cruise out to L2, cool down, and get calibrated, so I’m guessing late 2026 into early/mid 2027 based on how JWST’s commissioning went. Watching NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/roman-space-telescope/">Roman mission page</a> for updates — will post here when there’s something to see.</p></div><footer class="wrapper post__footer"><div class="post__share"></div></footer><nav class="pagination"><div class="pagination__title"><span>Read other posts</span></div><div class="pagination__buttons"><a href="https://www.spaceimaging.com/falcon-9-upper-stage-crashes-into-the-moon-in-rare-lunar-impact/" class="btn previous" rel="prev" aria-label="[MISSING TRANSLATION]: Falcon 9 Upper Stage Crashes Into the Moon in Rare Lunar Impact "><span class="btn__icon">←</span> <span class="btn__text">Falcon 9 Upper Stage Crashes Into the Moon in Rare Lunar Impact</span></a></div></nav></article></main><footer class="footer"><div class="footer__inner">
