They live 40 near water. Unlike reptiles, they do not have scaly skin. The 41 skin is smooth and moist. Mucous glands help to keep the skin 42 moist. Blood vessels just beneath the surface allow the 43 amphibian to use its skin to help it breathe. Some secrete 44 poisons from their skins. Special color cells allow the 45 amphibian to change its skin color by expanding or 46 contracting. If a limb is lost to a predator, some amphibians 47 can re-grow a new limb. Amphibians are cold-blooded and those 48 living in cold regions hibernate during winter. Eggs are laid 49 in jelly-like masses in the water, or in other moist places. 50 Some amphibian larvae have gills and live underwater until 51 they metamorphose into land-dwelling forms.
