352
353
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September) are the best times of year to visit Cascais. The weather will be glorious and everything will be fully open, but it will be without the extreme hecticness and crowds of summer.

355
The weather is suitable for spending time on the beach from mid-May until the end of September, but the sea temperature is always cold, only reaching 21C in the height of summer.

357
The winter months (November to February) can be wet and chilly, and it is better to be based in Lisbon at this time of year. March and April can be surprisingly wet as moisture-laden winds blow in from the Atlantic.

430
Cascais has a wonderful coastline of beautiful sandy beaches.

431
432
There are four fantastic beaches within walking distance of the historic centre of the town: the Praia da Conceição, the Praia da Duquesa, the Praia da Rainha and the Praia da Ribeira. Each of these offers golden sands, calm seawaters and outstanding tourist facilities.

433
434
Beyond the town, Cascais sits between two contrasting coastlines; the wild, windswept surfing beaches of the Serra da Sintra to the north, and the sheltered, sun-soaked beaches of the Portuguese Riviera stretching east towards Lisbon.

435
436
The Portuguese Riviera runs for 16km along the Tagus estuary, and its numerous sandy beaches are tucked away from the might of the Atlantic Ocean, making them ideal for families or a lazy day of sunbathing. These are the beaches that the residents of Lisbon (me included) flock to whenever the weather is fine. The largest and best of them all is the Praia de Carcavelos, which is where I head for a summer's day beach trip.

437
438
To the north, the coastline takes the full force of the Atlantic head on, and huge waves roll in along the shore, drawing surfers from across Portugal and beyond. The best known of these beaches are Praia do Guincho and Praia Grande, both set against the raw, dramatic scenery of the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais.
455
Cascais is a wonderful destination for a family holiday, with safe beaches, a calm and relaxed atmosphere, and many outstanding family-focused hotels. It is so well suited to families that when my brother and his young family (a seven-year-old nephew and five-year-old niece) wanted a holiday in Portugal, I took them to Cascais, and they all loved it. My brother appreciated the relaxed vibe and safe feel, my sister-in-law was won over by the many restaurants and charm of the town, and the kids of course enjoyed the beaches and ice creams!

456
457
Portugal is a very safe country, and being married to a Portuguese woman, I can say that the Portuguese are a genuinely family-focused nation. Children are made to feel welcome everywhere, from restaurants to tourist attractions, and there are plenty of hotels designed with families in mind. The beaches of Cascais have clean, calm waters and are supervised throughout the summer, while the town itself has a far more relaxed pace than the larger resort towns along the Algarve coastline.

499
Why is Cascais known as the Town of Kings and Fishermen?

500

501
502
Unlike many other Mediterranean beach resorts, which suddenly sprang up with the advent of mass tourism, Cascais has been established as a holiday destination since the early 19th century. Historically, Cascais was a minor fishing port, but this changed when King Luís I (1838 to 1889) proclaimed Cascais as his preferred location for a royal summer retreat.

503
504
The decampment of the Portuguese nobility from Lisbon to Cascais during the summer months encouraged the high society of 19th-century Europe to flock to Cascais as well. This influx of money and political power funded the construction of grand residences, lavish entertainment venues and fine parks.

505
506
The two extremes of people who lived in the town gave rise to Cascais' popular nickname of ‘The Town of Kings and Fishermen’. This trend of the high society has continued through to the present day, with many of Lisbon's rich and famous living within the vicinity of Cascais, giving the region a prosperous and sophisticated atmosphere.

510

511
512
The rapid explosion of Portugal’s tourism sector and the increased popularity of short-term rentals are having lasting negative effects on the region.

513
514
Houses and apartments that once were rented to Portuguese residents are now being used for short-term holiday rentals. This has pushed up rents and house prices in Lisbon, and to a lesser extent in Cascais, making it incredibly difficult for young Portuguese citizens to rent or buy houses.

515
516
Because of this, we do not like to recommend holiday rentals in the residential areas of Cascais. For holiday-style apartments with kitchenettes, do have a look at the Hotel Pestana Cascais Ocean.

650
About the Author: I'm Philip Giddings and I live in Graça (Lisbon) with my Portuguese wife Carla, whose family have been Lisboetas for generations. I've been visiting Portugal since 2001, writing independent guides at Cascais-Portugal.com since 2009, and the site is now my full-time work. I visited Cascais on my first trip to Lisbon as a teenager and Carla was so proud to show off her country. Twenty-five years later, married, with a bigger family and so much more experience of Portugal, we are still heading to the same beaches in Cascais and walking the same coastal promenade on a hot summer's day.

651This site has 32 guides on Cascais and the surrounding region. It takes no payment from tourist boards, tour operators, or attractions for inclusion, and is funded by affiliate commissions on tour bookings, disclosed on every page that contains them. Every practical detail (ticket prices, opening hours, bus routes, time-slot policies) is checked against the official sources and verified in person on the walks I make through the town each week. Read my full bio here.
