Being the mother of my nephew Daniel - at that time only one year old - she was in the midst of a promising career as an officer in the Dutch military police. She had served in Sinai, Egypt, and wartime Yugoslavia and had begun her path as a military police motorcycle officer, later rising to a high-ranking position. Suddenly she faced the terrifying possibility that she might not live to see her son grow up.`,`The illness, and the invasive surgeries that followed, left her with lifelong consequences, including permanent disabilities. During the years 2002 to 2019, the cancer returned several times. With each recurrence our family was thrown between hope and fear, relief and despair. Her struggle marked her life profoundly and left a lasting imprint on our family â and on my own sense of purpose. In later years, more friends were confronted with the disease, among them my former partner Angelien, to whom I continue to wish every strength and support.`,`By 2007, after years of experience introducing global brands, I had become acutely aware of the darker side of the nonprofit world. Watchdog groups such as Breast Cancer Action had exposed how some charities abused the pink ribbon for profit and marketing â pinkwashing rather than real change. It was then that I made a firm commitment: to build a global organisation that would be different. One that would direct funds primarily to research rather than empty awareness campaigns, and that would protect âPink Ribbonâ as a free symbol for all â not the property of a few who made it on time to the trademark office. Today the Pink Ribbon has indeed become a free symbol worldwide, with the exception of the Netherlands, where Stichting KWF still claims exclusive ownership of the brand.`,`The journey has been anything but easy.
