Film Freaks The Lincoln Theatre is continuing its fan-favorite film program, Film Freaks, on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. While previous years have centered around film basics, theory, and specific movie genres, 2026 is themed around “Film & You.” The next year of lectures and film screenings is tied to broader topics selected by both film curator Katelin Aanerud and the community. All Film Freaks events are free to attend and include an in-depth lecture, discussion, and top-secret film screening. Whether you are already a film lover or want to dive into the art form, Film Freaks is a program for everyone. October’s lecture will focus on the history of folk horror and the rise of urban legends in the media. Not only will Aanerud explain the traditions of folk tales but also dive deep into how those classic stories laid the foundation for horror films. From gothic tales of ghosts and ghouls, to the rebirth of horror during the 70s and 80s, all the way to modern Creepypastas, the Lincoln’s curator’s tales will surely give you a Halloween fright! <script type="text/javascript">AdGroup16();</script> Golden Oldies Held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m., Golden Oldies will feature a free screening of George A. Romero’s classic zombie movie Night of The Living Dead (1968). This program aims to provide a glimpse into the history of Lincoln Theatre programming by screening films that were projected on the screen during their days as a movie palace. Friday Flix: \$5 Films! The Lincoln Theatre’s Friday Flix program brings back some of the biggest films in cinematic history and screens them in its iconic Mayan Revival-style auditorium. On Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., The Lincoln will be screening Hocus Pocus (1993). Special prizes await those who attend dressed in witchy attire. Tickets for the event can be purchased online or at the door on the day of the event. In the Gallery's continuing efforts to showcase the talent of musicians living within a 50 mile radius of Marion, the October Artwalk event will feature an exciting concert by the ever popular Wayne Dunford. This concert will showcase Dunford’s talents with an acoustic blend of folk, Americana, indie and old time music. More familiar behind drums accompanying a band, Dunford is stepping out and playing the music he enjoys the most on his guitar. Dunford grew up in Wytheville listening to the music of WYVE. In addition to being a wonderful musician and entertainer, he is also a professional photographer, artist and cattle farmer <script type="text/javascript">AdGroup16();</script> The October Artwalk will also showcase a special exhibit by Marion artist Mina Mirkwood. Mirkwood primarily works with acrylic, gouache, and watercolors. She draws inspiration from her love of the Appalachian mountains that surround her and the many farm animals she raises. Minkwood is known for her impressionistic styled paintings, using bright colors and bold paint strokes. She currently works at the Art Place in Chilhowie, where she coordinates gallery events, organizes open mic music events and offers art classes and workshops. The Gallery will open from 5 to 8 p.m. with the informal music concert beginning at 6 p.m. The Wayne Dunford concert is sponsored by the Bank of Marion. During the October Artwalk visitors will also have the opportunity to check out beautiful handmade cards, pottery, jewelry, baskets, cutting boards, wooden bowls and utensils, window sun catchers, hand crafted books, bookmarks and so much more now showcased at the gallery. More work on display in December by all the Appalachian Spirit Gallery members include paintings, executed in oils, watercolors, acrylics, alcohol inks and mixed media; photography, felted works, quilts, stained glass and more. Invite your friends, view the wonderful art, grab a cookie, listen to beautiful music, sing along with friends, and do some shopping.
