Just before the Thanksgiving recess in 2004, Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) snuck a rider onto the huge omnibus spending bill that gutted the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act and placed over 8,000 horses and an undetermined number of burros in immediate risk of being sold to slaughter. Fortunately after wild horses started showing up at the slaughterhouses, Congress placed a temporary ban on the practice, however the issue is far from resolved. 76
77The Alliance of Wild Horse Advocates is a nationwide federation of large and small wild horse and animal welfare groups and non-affiliated individuals who have an interest in preventing the slaughter of, and restoring protections for, America's free-roaming horses and burros. 78
79The objectives of the Alliance include acquiring and distributing accurate and up to date information, educating its participants on relevant issues, sharing information about activities taking place in the various states and regions, and determining the most appropriate and ethical actions that groups and individual citizens can take to stop unnecessary removal, warehousing and potential sale for slaughter of thousands of our wild horses. 80
81We invite you to peruse our web site.
