We must 53 demand that caring continues to disseminate 54 throughout the world; a meaningful sense of values 55 must be established. Caring individuals must be 56 the role models for all people, but especially for 57 the young. The media should deliberately spread 58 the pictures and words of those doing caring acts 59 for others internationally, as is now done for 60 athletes, entertainers and politicians. Dr. Heimlich 77 was on the panel and was quite cordial until 78 after the meeting when, after ALL of the other 79 panelists felt that there was insufficient 80 evidence to recommend his maneuver first ahead 81 of MTM ventilation. (It was added for cases 82 where particulate matter was suspected to be in 83 the airway or if MTM failed). At that point, he 84 viciously attacked ME (even though I was totally 85 neutral and just interested in the data). He got 86 really angry when I pressed him to produce 87 references for studies he was citing that, 88 despite a great deal of library work on my part, 89 could simply not be found.</font></i></p> 90 <p><i><font size="-1" face="Arial">He wrote to my 91 University president, dean, and about a dozen 92 others accusing me of everything under the sun. 93 As a brand new, junior faculty member, that 94 created a major problem which, fortunately, once 95 reviewed locally, went away as my superiors 96 realized that I had done nothing wrong.</font></i></p> 97 <p><i><font size="-1" face="Arial">I believe that Dr. 98 Heimlich may have tried the same tactics with 99 Dr. Linda Quan, Dr. Richard Melker, Dr. Jerome 100 Modell, and even Dr. Roger White. I am an 208 Anesthesiologist and was, at the time, in 209 practice in Everett, Washington. Having been 210 interested in resuscitation for many years, I 211 was excited about Dr. Heimlichs proposal. 212 Creating an artificial cough made a lot of 213 sense to me.</font></i></p> 214 <p><i><font size="-1" face="Arial">Because Dr. 215 Heimlich used dogs for his experiments and since 216 the dog has a much different anatomical 217 configuration compared with the human, I 218 proposed to the ECC my idea of a study on human 219 volunteers and was encouraged to proceed. I 220 think there was an overall excitement over the 221 Heimlich concept.</font></i></p> 222 <p><i><font size="-1" face="Arial">I contacted Dr. 223 Heimlich to review with him, the exact procedure 224 as he conceived it. He was excited about my 225 study and was, at first, very cooperative and 226 encouraging. He asked that I let him know of the 227 results of this study as soon as possible as he 228 had a lecture to give in the near future, 229 wanting to know of results of my study. While 230 designing the protocol for this study, I decided 231 to make a comparison between applying the 232 thrust to the upper abdomen (Heimlich) and 233 applying the thrust to the mid chest. We 234 measured peak pressures and volumes created by 235 the different maneuvers in six anesthetized 236 human volunteers.</font></i></p> 237 <p><i><font size="-1" face="Arial">What became evident 238 was that greater peak pressures, flows and 239 volumes of air moved resulted with the Chest 240 Thrust than with the Abdominal Thrust 241 (Heimlich). I reported this to Dr. Heimlich. He 242 went ballistic, nasty. His personality changed 243 completely. I was shocked and amazed. My 244 amazement and shock was only beginning. He 245 immediately filed unethical medical practices 246 against me with the American Medical 247 Association, American Society of 248 Anesthesiologists, Washington State Medical 249 Association, my local hospitals, the American 250 Heart Association and there may have been 251 others.
