1747
1748

1770
1771
Truth is stranger than fiction: The team competition at the Ski Flying World Championships ended with a major surprise. For the first time ever, a Japanese team won a World Championship medal, and it was gold. Athletes and spectators alike fluctuated between amazement and bewilderment during the competition.
1772The blame lay with the newly crowned ski flying world champion Domen Prevz, who disrupted the competition schedule due to a mishap. In the fourth and supposedly strongest group of athletes, Marius Lindvik (NOR) was sitting on the bar when a pair of skis went past him on both sides.
1773They made their own way down through the thick snowfall, and the ski brand suggested that they belonged to Domen Prevz. He was supposed to start three places after Lindvik.
1774Despite a replacement being brought in quickly, the “Domenator” was not given permission to fly in round 1, and the Slovenians were only allowed to count a total of seven attempts. Lying in 8th place after the first run, a medal was out of reach.

1775
1776
1777
Slovenia out, Team Germany in an unfortunate fourth place, and Norway with a guaranteed bronze medal – that much was certain when the last two jumpers from the Austrian and Japanese teams completed their final flights on the Heini Klopfer ski flying hill. Tomofumi Naito and Ryoyu Kobayashi had already performed well, putting Stephan Embacher and Stefan Kraft under pressure. Manuel Fettner kept Team Austria in the game against Naoki Nakamura, so that Jan Hörl, as the last jumper, really had to give it his all to catch up with Ren Nikaido, who had brought his team to 1569.6 points. However, the Austrian failed to do so, and the team had to settle for second place with 1560.0 points.

2008

2037
With a bow to the 18,000 enthusiastic spectators in the stadium at the Heini-Klopfer-Ski-Jumping-Hill, Domen Prevz landed in the outrun as the new ski flying world champion. In the final round, the Slovenian simply confirmed what had already become clear: the World Cup leader in ski jumping is also in a class of his own in ski flying.

2038
2039
Prevz had already won the qualification round and only gambled away his lead in the first round of the individual competition by shortening his inrun. In the three remaining rounds, he confidently outclassed all his competitors and ultimately became the deserved ski flying world champion with a lead of more than 50 meters.

2040
2041
After the suit scandal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim, Marius Lindvik (NOR) was back on the podium for the first time. The 2022 ski flying world champion from Vikersund managed to catch up with Japan's Ren Nikaido and relegate him to third place.

2042
2043
The Germans put in a solid performance, but none of them managed to deliver two equally good flights. As a result, they failed to finish in the top ten for the first time since 2010.

2044
2045
The Austrians, who put in a strong team performance with Jan Hörl (Rank 4), Stephan Embacher (Rank 5) and Stefan Kraft (Rank 7), also came away empty-handed in the individual competition. However, the Austrian Eagles are clear contenders for victory in tomorrow's team competition.

2047
The German team for the team flying event has been decided. Stefan Horngacher will send Pius Paschke into the inure first. Felix Hoffmann will be second, Karl Geiger third and Philipp Raimund will finish the competition. The decision not to let Andreas Wellinger complete was not an easy one for head coach Stefan Horngacher. “The deciding factor was that the guys who competed in the individual event all improved their performance, and I don't want to take any risks now.”

2088

2089
2090

2117

2117In its bid to host the 2031 Nordic World Ski Championships, Oberstdorf is focusing on providing a memorable experience, ensuring sustainability, and securing strong regional support. Following the 1987 and 2005 Championships, as well as the 2021 pandemic World Championships which were held without spectators, the winter sports stronghold is eager to host the event again. The decision will be made on 11 June 2026 at the FIS Congress in Belgrade, which around 1,000 council members are expected to attend. Planica is the only competitor.

2118
2119
Oberstdorf's bid is based on its existing first-class infrastructure, short distances, and sustainable energy and mobility concepts. The World Championships are intended to provide long-term impetus for young talent, volunteer work, and tourism. SC Oberstdorf chairman Georg Geiger emphasized on the sidelines of the Ski Flying World Championships: “A major event like the Nordic World Ski Championships is an important source of inspiration for the younger generation. They see role models who motivate them.”

2120
2121
Mayor Klaus King also highlights the town's broad support: 'We want to prove it again. Five years ago, we broke even despite the pandemic.' Planned measures, such as a parking garage on the outskirts of the town and electric local bus lines, are intended to further strengthen the town's infrastructural sustainability.

2122
2123
DSV spokesperson Stefan Schwarzbach emphasizes the sporting significance: “Sustainability affects not only nature, but also the development of sport. Around 40 national squad athletes are currently training in Oberstdorf.” The application met with broad approval in the FIS Council, but is “not a sure thing.”

2124
2125
On Sunday, the FIS-President, Johan Eliasch, and several Council members are expected to attend the Ski Flying World Championships to hold further talks. Also expected to attend are the Federal Minister for Sport and Volunteering, Christiane Schenderlein. More in-depth discussions are planned for the Olympic Games in Milan.

2237

2260
7,000 spectators at the Heini Klopfer ski jump tried to carry local hero Karl Geiger as far down as possible with their enthusiasm on the first day of the individual competition of the Ski Flying World Championships. After a long dry spell, the Oberstdorf native finally delivered a performance that did not disappoint his fans. He sailed 217.5 meters in the first roun

In the second round, he was a little frustrated with the jury, who had sent him off despite poor wind conditions. “I don't quite understand why they couldn't have waited a little longer,” he puzzled after landing at 197.0 meters. In the end, it was enough for 11th place.

2261
2262
Once again, Domen Prevc (SLO) proved unbeatable. After a shortened inrun, he fell short of the top spot in the first round with 204.0 metres and had to start his catch-up from second place. However, his second attempt restored everything to normal: Domen Prevz ahead of the rest of the world. Second place went to Ren Nikaido of Japan, who achieved a personal best of 230.5 metres in the first round of ski flying. He delivered another top performance in the second round, relegating the previous leader, Marius Lindvik of Norway, to third place.

2368
2369

2370
2371
Seit fast 20 Jahren erledigt Schmidt diesen Job nun.

What is this man in the German Ski Association outfit always doing on the coaches tower? Almost all ski jumping enthusiasts watching TV will recognize Michael Schmidt's face. Whether at World Cup ski
2400jumping and ski flying events, or at men's or women's competitions, the man from the Sauerland region is responsible for the team of forerunners and is therefore in close contact with the coaches, the respective race management, and race director Sandro Pertile.

2401
2402
Schmidt has been doing this job for almost 20 years now. It is all voluntary work, as he runs a transport company in his day job. Schmidt was a ski jumper himself until 1996, then coach of the German women's team for two years, and has been head coach of the forerunners since 2015.

2403
2404
At the events, the forerunners take to the track before the World Cup athletes on training and competition days to check the condition of the facility and the landing hill, determine the correct inrun length, and set the camera positions.

2405
2406
In 2008, the Sauerland native began to build a permanent team because many World Cup organizers had difficulty providing the required number of up to 20 forerunners for a competition on their own. “In Oberstdorf at the ski flying event, there weren't enough jumpers at the time, and they had to fly some in from Norway to comply with the rules,” Schmidt recalls. It was expensive and unprofitable. Schmidt then took decisive action and began to build up a pool of forerunners that could be called upon at all World Cup venues, at the Continental Cup, and for the Nordic Combined events.

2407
2408
There are now around 65 active members, including people from Germany, Austria, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and even Japan.

2410
After all these years, it's time to call it quits. Michael Schmidt will be the most familiar face on the coaches tower for this final season. Now he wants to focus on something else, and after such a long time, living out of a suitcase is no longer particularly appealing. It's a done deal that he will be back at his home ski jumping hill in the future, training with the young athletes of SC Meinerzhagen. And he's looking forward to this new challenge.

2411
2412
As a thank you for his many years of collaboration, Michael Schmidt received a bowl of Kässpätzle filled with delicacies from his long-time colleague Hans Schmid and Secretary General Florian Stern at the Ski Flying World Championships in Oberstdorf. On top of that, he was invited to visit Oberstdorf as a guest anytime.

2452
2453

2479
2480
There was a fantastic atmosphere with over 1,500 enthusiastic spectators in Oberstdorf's Kurpark for the official opening ceremony of the FIS Ski Flying World Championships. The Allgäu Euregio alphorn group Via Salina provided an atmospheric opening. Dressed in their typical red uniforms, the marching band Brass2Go played the Rocky
2480song “Gonna Fly Now,” setting the tone for the weekend. The fans cheered and enjoyed the exciting show, and when the DC Dance Company whirled across the stage to “Beautiful People,” the crowd also got moving.

2481
2482
“Who hasn't dreamed of flying?” asked Dr. Franz Steinle, honorary president of the German Ski Association (DSV), and enthused, "In ski flying, this dream becomes reality. The athletes take off, break away from the slope, and for a brief, intense moment, anything seems possible. As easy and elegant as it looks, these seconds demand everything from the athletes. And that is precisely what makes ski flying so fascinating. Thrill meet precision, speed, control, and all of that bundled into a single flight. Every jump is different, every flight tells its own story, and we have the privilege of being there live.“ Steinle thanked the numerous helpers and the local authorities and emphasized, ”Oberstdorf and the Allgäu region are once again the center of the ski jumping world."

2483
2484
With a brief review of the last Ski Flying World Championships in 2018 in Germany's southernmost municipality, Fritz Sehrwind, 2nd Mayor of Oberstdorf, welcomed guests and ski jumpers and emphasized: “We in Oberstdorf are proud to be one of the few places in the world where ski flying is even possible.” Sehrwind motivated the spectators: “Support these courageous athletes with your fairness, your applause, and a good atmosphere. Give them wings and turn flyers into high flyers!”

2485
2486
Applause and cheer greeted mascot Nordi, who danced along the catwalk in front of the teams and their flag bearers as they made their way to the stage. Markus Müller kicked things off for the Austrian team, followed by Bulgaria, Canada, Estonia, Finland, France, and Italy. The cheering grew really loud when Ryoyu Kobayashi and Team Japan appeared, followed by Kazakhstan and the celebrated Team Poland with ‘King’ Kamil Stoch. The Slovenians were just posing for the obligatory team photo with Nordi when Simon Amman, visibly in good mood, danced across the catwalk waving the Swiss flag. His teammates joined in and generated enthusiasm. After Turkey and Ukraine, the noise level rose significantly as local hero Karl Geiger marched in with Team Germany. Geiger was beaming, as he had finally performed well again in the qualification round.

2487
2488
The District Administrator of Oberallgäu, Indra Baier-Müller, together with SC Oberstdorf president Georg Geiger, DSV sports director Horst Hüttel, and tourism director Petra Genster carried the German flag, while ski jumping legends Sven Hannawald, Andy Widhölzl, Georg Späth, and Espen Bredesen presented the FIS flag. In his video message, FIS President Johan Eliasch compared the athletes to magicians: "It is a discipline like no other, where sport meets magic and the seemingly impossible becomes possible. But these athletes in the air seem to defy the laws of physics!“ Eliasch thanked the countless volunteers and praised the organizers: ”This is our seventh time here in Oberstdorf. And there is a reason why we keep coming back here. It's not just the fantastic venue, but also the wonderful people!"

2529

2550
What a great start to the 2026 Ski Flying World Championships at the Heini Klopfer ski flying hill! There was an upset for Karl Geiger, who has struggled so much on ski jumping hills around the world in recent weeks. After being dropped from the Olympic team, he is suddenly back in contention at his first Ski Flying World Championships in his home town. In front of 3,700 spectators, he delivered a top performance and will now go into the two individual competitions on Friday and Saturday as the best German athlete. His jump of 210.5 meters put him in 10th place. The other three Germans also qualified. Philipp Raimund (201.5 meters) came in 15th. Felix Hoffmann was not entirely satisfied with his jump of 191.0 meters, which put him in 26th place, and two places behind him was Pius Paschke with his jump of 188.5 meters.

2551
2552
So there is still room for improvement for the DSV athletes, who were once again beaten by Domen Prevz (SLO) today. The dominant force in ski
2552jumping this winter took a clear victory in the qualifying round with a distance of 228.5 meters/225.5 points, ahead of the youngest Austrian ski jumper Stephan Embacher, who jumped 227.0 meters (212 points), and his teammate Jan Hörl (215.5 meters/204.6 points).

2889

2916
2917
The lights are green: Michael Neumayer gave the snow conditions a definite thumbs up. “The team here has done a great job,” praised the technical delegate. And from faraway Japan, Andreas Bauer also expressed his gratitude for the excellent preparation. He was actually supposed to approve the ski jumping hill as “airworthy,” but was assigned as technical delegate in Sapporo and therefore sent a representative.

2918
2919
Conditions at the Heini-Klopfer-ski-jumping-hill in the Stillach Valley are ideal for making the Ski Flying World Championships from Thursday to Sunday a truly spectacular event. The infrastructure is in place, the weather forecast is good, and now it's time for the final preparations so that everything is ready for the qualifying rounds on Thursday and the competitions can begin.

2920
2921
Ski jumpers from 19 nations have registered for the four-day event. The World Championships begin on Thursday with the qualifying rounds. This is already a highlight for the Nordic Combined athletes, who are allowed to participate in the warm-up. Then things get serious when the qualifying rounds begin at 5 p.m., with all eyes surely on the current high-flyer Domen Prevz. The Slovenian, who has dominated the World Cup this season, already set the hill record four years ago on the ski flying hill in Oberstdorf with 242.5 meters. He is certainly the clear favorite when it comes to finding the new ski flying world champion in four rounds of competition.

2922
2923
In the evening, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the ski jumpers from all 19 registered nations up close in the Kurpark. The Ski Flying World Championships will be officially opened at 8 p.m., and the top athletes will be cheered on stage. In addition to the official opening speeches, a small show program awaits visitors. The Kurpark will once again take center stage on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the medal award ceremony for the new ski flying world champion. On Sunday, however, the world's best ski flying team will be crowned in the stadium.

2924
2925
Tickets for Thursday, Friday, and Sunday are still available in advance or at the box office on the day of the event.
