368										Alexander.</strong> Built in November 
369										1842 by Charles Larpenteur and Alexander 
370										McKenzie at the mouth of Armell&#39;s Creek 
371										(junction of 1-94 and Colstrip Road, 
372										Highway 39) west of Forsyth. Lasted 
373										until 1850.</p>
374										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
375										Benton on the Missouri.</strong> Built 
376										in 1847 by Major Alexander Culbertson of 
377										the American Fur Company on the Missouri 
378										River for Blackfeet trade. Has the 
379										reputation of being the most important 
380										of all the fur-trade forts. Purchased by 
381										the government in 1869 and became a 
382										military fort.</p>
383										<p class="text-justify"><strong>
384										<img alt="Fort Union" class="auto-style6" longdesc="../../../MTA14/history/Fort Union" src="../../images/facts/Fort-Union_small.jpg" style="float: left" xthumbnail-orig-image="../../../MTA15/images/history/Fort-Union.jpg">Fort 
385										Benton on the Yellowstone.</strong> 
386										Constructed during the fall of 1821 on 
387										the Yellowstone River by Joshua Pilcher 
388										of Missouri Fur Company on or near the 
389										site of Fort Manuel Lisa west of Hysham.</p>
390										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
391										Campbell.</strong> An <em>opposition</em> 
392										trading post of Harvey, Primeau and 
393										Company where Fort Benton is located 
394										now. Built by Alexander Harvey in 1846, 
395										the log stockade first was on the south 
396										side of the river. Shortly thereafter it 
397										was removed to the north side and built 
398										of adobe. Abandoned in 1860.</p>
399										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
400										Cass.</strong> Built by Samuel Tullock 
401										in 1832 for the American Fur Company. 
402										The location is very near the 
403										Yellowstone- Treasure County line two 
404										miles east of Custer, Montana. A 
405										130-foot-square cottonwood log fort with 
406										two blockhouses at opposite corners. 
407										Abandond in 1835.</p>
408										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
409										F.A. Chardon.</strong> Built in 1844 by 
410										Alexander Harvey and Chardon, acting for 
411										American Fur Company, near mouth of the 
412										Judith River on the Missouri River. 
413										Abandoned by Culbertson the next year.</p>
414										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
415										Connah.</strong> Construction was begun 
416										in 1846 by Angus McDonald of Hudson&#39;s 
417										Bay Company. It was the last Hudson&#39;s 
418										Bay Company post constructed in U.S. 
419										territory. Named for the Connen River in 
420										Scotland. Closed by 1871. All that 
421										remains is one log storehouse 6 miles 
422										south of Ronan.</p>
423										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
424										Cotton.</strong> Established in 1844 by 
425										the American Fur Company three miles 
426										above Fort Benton. Lasted less than a 
427										year.</p>
428										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Flathead 
429										Post.</strong> Established in 1823 by 
430										Alexander Ross of Hudson&#39;s Bay Company 
431										about five miles east of Thompson Falls. 
432										This post possibly was moved several 
433										times through the years. In 1846 it was 
434										removed to Post Creek near Charlo and 
435										renamed Fort Connah.</p>
436										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
437										Henry. </strong>(See also Three Forks 
438										Post.) Another Fort Henry was founded by 
439										Andrew Henry during the winter of 
440										1810-11 on the Henry&#39;s (North) Fork of 
441										the Snake River in Idaho.</p>
442										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
443										Howse.</strong> Built in 1810 by 
444										Hudson&#39;s Bay trader, Joseph Howse. 
445										Occupied during the winter and abandoned 
446										in the spring of 1811. Location was 
447										Flathead Valley, exact site unknown.</p>
448										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
449										Jackson.</strong> Built in 1833 as a 
450										winter camp by F.A. Chardon in December 
451										1833 at mouth of Poplar River where 
452										Poplar, Montana is located today. Its 
453										palisade was about 50 feet square.</p>
454										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Kootenai 
455										Post.</strong> Established in November 
456										1808 by Finan McDonald of the North West 
457										Company on the Kootenai River nearly 
458										opposite the present town of Libby. The 
459										post consisted of two leather lodges and 
460										a log building. Location moved in 1811 
461										to near Jennings, Montana. Date of 
462										closure unknown.</p>
463										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
464										Lewis.</strong> Established in 1845 on 
465										the Missouri River about 18 miles 
466										northeast of Fort Benton. This American 
467										Fur Company fort was dismantled in 1847 
468										and moved to the site of Fort Benton.</p>
469										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
470										Manuel Lisa.</strong> Established in 
471										1807 by Manuel Lisa at the mouth of the 
472										Big Horn River near Hysham. This was the 
473										first permanent settlement in Montana 
474										and was occupied until 1811. Also called 
475										Fort Remon (after Lisa&#39;s son), Fort 
476										Raymond, Fort Manuel Lisa, and Fort 
477										Manuel.</p>
478										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
479										McKenzie.</strong> Built by the American 
480										Fur Company in 1832 on the north bank of 
481										the Missouri River about 14 miles 
482										upriver, northeast of Fort Benton. One 
483										of the largest of the American Fur 
484										Company posts, it was abandoned in 1844.</p>
485										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
486										Pease.</strong> A minor, temporary 
487										trading post built in 1875 by Major F.D. 
488										Pease for trade with the Crows. Its 
489										stockade was 100 feet square and was 
490										located on the north bank of the 
491										Yellowstone River seven miles below the 
492										mouth of the Big Horn River near Hysham. 
493										In March of 1876 soldiers from Fort 
494										Ellis at Bozeman forced the post to

503										palisade was abandoned in the spring of

505										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Salish 
506										House.</strong> Built by David Thompson 
507										of the North West Company in November 
508										1809. Its location was on the Clark&#39;s 
509										Fork of the Columbia near Thompson 
510										Falls.</p>
511										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
512										Sarpy No. 1.</strong> Built in 1850 by 
513										the American Fur Company for trade with 
514										the Crows. The post was located on the 
515										north bank of the Yellowstone about five 
516										miles below the mouth of the Rosebud 
517										River near Rosebud, Montana, fifteen 
518										miles east of Forsyth. Abandoned and 
519										burned May 19, 1855.</p>
520										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
521										Sarpy No. 2.</strong> The last post 
522										built for trade with the Crow Indians. 
523										Built in 1857 by Alexander Culbertson of 
524										the American Fur Company on the 
525										Yellowstone River about 25 miles below 
526										the mouth of the Big Horn River near 
527										present-day Sanders. It was about 100 
528										feet square and consisted of a palisade 
529										of 15-foot-high cottonwood logs.</p>
530										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Three 
531										Forks Post.</strong> Also called Fort 
532										Henry. Built by Andrew Henry and Pierre 
533										Menard of the Missouri Fur Company near 
534										Three Forks, Montana, between the 
535										Jefferson and Madison rivers about two 
536										miles above their confluence. 
537										Construction began April 3, 1810. The 
538										post lasted until the late fall of 1810 
539										and was abandoned because of tremendous 
540										Blackfeet pressure. The 300-foot-square, 
541										3-footdeep double-row palisade was built 
542										of cottonwood logs.</p>
543										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort 
544										Union.</strong> Built by the American 
545										Fur Company in 1829, probably overseen 
546										by James Kipp. The 220-foot by 240-foot 
547										palisade of cottonwood logs was set on 
548										bedrock of limestone. The location of 
549										the primary post of the American Fur 
550										Company is on the Montana-North Dakota 
551										border and on the north bank of the 
552										Missouri River near its confluence with 
553										the Yellowstone River. Last used as a 
554										fur fort in 1867 and then purchased by 
555										the U.S. military.</p>
556										<p class="text-justify"><strong>Fort Van 
557										Buren.</strong> Built by Samuel Tullock 
558										in 1835 near the mouth of Rosebud Creek 
559										east of Forsyth. This American Fur 
560										Company post was abandoned and burned in
