The term âPreterismâ is derived 318 from the Latin praeteritus, meaning that which has past. 319 The term occurs in Matt. 24:34 in the Latin Vulgate to describe the 320 time of Christ's second coming: "Verily I say unto you, This 321 generation shall not pass ("non praeteribit haec generatio"), 322 till all these things be fulfilled." Full Preterists view the Second 323 Coming and related events as being fulfilled in the events 324 culminating in the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.
325
326 "The Time is Fulfilled"
327
The Old Testament 328 was characterized by a patient waiting for the kingdom and reign of 329 the Messiah. The Jews of Jesus' day recognized that the time 330 for fulfillment of the Old Testament prophets was near. When 331 John the Baptist appeared, "the people were in expectation, and all 332 men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or 333 no" (Lk. 3:14). Jesus began his ministry proclaiming the 334 kingdom and reign of Christ, saying: "The time is fulfilled, and the 335 kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel" 336 (Mk. 1:15).
337
The prophets made 338 no distinction between the first and seconding coming of Christ, but 339 treated them as a unity, interrupted only by a brief absence when 340 the Messiah would be "cut off" (Dan. 9:26). However, the 341 Messiah would return, and "destroy the city and the sanctuary." Jesus taught that his return was so imminent that the apostles would 342 not have opportunity to fully evangelize Palestine: "When they 343 persecute you in this city, flee ye unto another: for verily I
343say 344 unto, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son 345 of man be come" (Matt. 10:23).
346
Jesus spoke of this 347 coming in his kingdom when he stated: "For the Son of man shall come 348 in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward 349 every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There 350 be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see 351 the Son of man coming in his kingdom" (Matt. 16:27,28). Luke states that the kingdom and reign of Christ would come in the 352 events marking the destruction of Jerusalem: "So likewise ye, 353 when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of 354 God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation 355 shall not pass away, till all be fulfilledâ (Lk. 21:31,32; 356 cf. II Tim. 4:1).
357
The return of the 358 Messiah would be in that generation; some of the apostles 359 would live to witness it. Just before his ascension, 360 John was expressly named among the disciples who would be alive at 361 Christ's return: "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that 362 to thee? follow me" (Jno. 21:22).
363
The nearness of 364 Christ's second coming is affirmed over and over. Paul said, 365 "But this I say, Brethren, the time is short" (I Cor. 7:29). 366 James said, "the coming of the Lord draweth nigh...the judge 367 standeth before the door" (Jm. 5:8,9). Peter stated, 368 "the end of all things is at hand" (I Pet. 4:7). The Hebrew 369 writer makes several unmistakable statements to this effect when he 370 says, "For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and 371 will not tarry" (Heb. 10:37). The nearness of the day is 372 seen in the fact that his readers would "see the day approaching" 373 (Heb. 10:25).
374
The apostle John 375 indicated the nearness of the end when he stated they were in the 376 "last time" (Grk. hora, "hour"): "Little children, it 377 is the last time; and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, 378 even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the 379 last time" (I Jno. 2:18). The nearness of Christ's return is 380 repeated over and over throughout Revelation in unmistakable terms, 381 saying, the "time is at hand" (Rev. 1:4; 22:10), "Behold, I 382 come quickly" (Rev. 2:5,16; 3:11; 22:12,20), "Behold, I come as a 383 thief" (Rev. 3:3; 16:15), and the things of the prophecy "must 384 shortly come to pass" (Rev. 1:1; 22:6).
385
There is nothing 386 difficult in any of this language; all who will may plainly see that 387 Jesus and his apostles taught the first century church to be in 388 earnest expectation of the Lord's return. The difficulty 389 arises not so much from the announced time of Christ's 390 return, but understanding its manner. Because men have 391 been taught that Christ's return would mark the end of the universe, 392 its continued existence beyond the specified time frame has forced 393 them to explain away the express statements of time by resort to 394 theories of delayed fulfillment or double fulfillment, 395 and assertions that Christ and the apostles were simply wrong. Preterism rejects all such theories, maintaining that the time 396 elements cannot be disregarded or explained away consistent with the 397 doctrine of verbal inspiration. The very authority of the 398 scriptures is at stake!
399
400 Biblical Hermeneutics
401
It is a basic 402 principle of hermeneutics that obscure or difficult passages must 403 be interpreted in light of those that are plain. The great 404 hurdle many face in understanding Biblical eschatology is the 405 figurative nature of apocalyptic language. The language of the 406 prophets by its very definition is veiled and obscure; it is marked 407 by poetic imagery, license, and exaggeration, and is impressed with 408 hyperbole, metaphors and symbols. Hence, as between 409 apocalyptic language describing the manner of Christ's return 410 and the plain statements of time given by the Lord and his apostles 411 concerning when it would occur, it is clear that the former 412 must be interpreted in light of the latter and not vice versa. 413
414
Preterism maintains 415 that the eschatological teaching of the Lord and his apostles was 416 fulfilled when and as prophesied. However, Preterists insist 417 that the manner of fulfillment was essentially spiritual, not 418 physical, and that language which on its face appears to describe 419 the dissolution of the chemical elements in a cataclysmic end of 420 time and space must be given a figurative construction and 421 interpretation. This is required, not only because of the 422 confines for fulfillment imposed by statements of time, but by the 423 usus loquendi (manner of speech) of the prophets. The 424 following language describing God's judgment upon Idumea and the 425 nations of the world in the days of Assyria and Babylon will help 426 make the point:
427
Come near, ye 428 nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and 429 all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of 430 it. For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and 431 his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he 432 hath delivered them to the slaughter.
432 Their slain also shall 433 be cast out, and their stink shall come out of their carcasses, and 434 the mountains shall be melted with their blood. And 435 all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be 436 rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as 437 the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the 438 fig tree. For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: 439 behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my 440 curse, to judgment. Isa. 34:1-4,9-10; emphasis added.)
441
The poetic and 442 figurative nature of the instant language is only too obvious; it 443 describes a time of divine wrath upon the world by the Assyrians and 444 Babylonians. Yet, none will contend that in the dissolution of Edom 445 and the world the stars of heaven were literally dissolved, the 446 heavens rolled together as a scroll, or the dust of the land was 447 turned to brimstone. Edom ceased to exist as a separate people and 448 nation millennia ago, yet none of the physical phenomena described 449 attended its passing. Although language of a universal nature 450 involving the whole fabric of the heavens and earth is employed to 451 describe the judgments announced, its fulfillment is circumscribed 452 in time and manner to the people and era set out. Occurrence of such 453 language and imagery is common throughout the Old Testament in 454 passages describing God's judgment upon various peoples and nations; 455 it is the usus loquendi of the prophets; invariably it is poetic, 456 never literal.
457
Understanding the 458 figurative nature of apocalyptic language in the Old Testament is 459 essential to the mastery of Biblical eschatology for at least two 460 reasons: First, because identical language is employed by Jesus and 461 the apostles in the New Testament and we must know how to interpret 462 it. Do we give it a construction and interpretation consistent with 463 the historical usage of the prophets, or do we suddenly cast aside 464 long established rules of interpretation in favor of a literalistic 465 approach? In his great eschatological discourse on the mount of 466 Olives, Jesus said: "Immediately after the tribulation of those days 467 shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, 468 and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens 469 shall be shaken...Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not 470 pass, till all these things be fulfilled" (Matt. 24:29,34).
471
Was it the Lord's 472 intention that we understand him to mean that the stars would 473 literally fall from the sky in the events he described, and not 474 rather that these were figures used to describe events of a 475 political and spiritual nature? If we abandon the historical usage 476 of the prophets and adopt a literal approach, upon what ground are 477 we to base such departure? Are we not upon surer ground to adhere to 478 established methods of hermeneutics? If the usus loquendi of the 479 prophets does not require as much, surely the express statement of 480 time for fulfillment does. Surely, we look in vain for fulfillment 481 of the events described beyond the generation addressed. Within the 482 life of many then living, the world would undergo cataclysmic 483 judgments: from the British Isles to Rome and Italy, Greece, Asia, 484 Egypt, and Palestine: all would suffer divine retribution for the 485 murder of Christ, the rejection of his gospel, and the persecution 486 of his church. Jerusalem would be destroyed and the monarchial "sun" 487 darkened, the priestly "moon" would withdraw its light, the "stars" 488 of the elders and Sanhedrin would be loosed from their orbit as the 489 government and polity of the Jewish nation suffered final and 490 irrevocable dissolution.
491
Second, 492 understanding the figurative nature of apocalyptic language in the 493 Old Testament is essential to the mastery of Biblical eschatology in 494 the New Testament because of the relation of the parts to the whole. 495 The New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Nowhere 496 had the Old Testament ever prophesied the end of the cosmos in
497 connection with the coming of the Messiah, or otherwise. Jesus and 498 the apostles did not prophesy it now. Nothing should be introduced 499 into New Testament eschatological teaching and doctrine that cannot 500 be proved by resort to the Old Testament. Since the Old Testament 501 nowhere teaches that the earth is to be destroyed in one final 502 cataclysmic act associated with the reign of the Messiah, there is 503 no basis for introducing such teaching into the New Testament. To do 504 so severs the continuity between the Testaments as the unfolding of 505 God's redemptive purpose for man. In the Old Testament man was told 506 what to look to in the kingdom and reign of the Messiah; in the New 507 Testament he is assured it is come.
508
Far from 509 prophesying the destruction of the cosmos, the coming of Christ was 510 to mark an era of unprecedented peace on earth as the kingdom and 511 reign of the Messiah extended to all nations. Christendom would 512 serve to unite the nations of the world politically as in the church 513 the nations were united spiritually. As fellow-members of the same 514 spiritual kingdom, nation would not lift up sword against nation; 515 neither would they learn war any more (Isa. 2:4) .The nations which 516 were divided by language and region would be united in a common 517 language in Christ, as with one mind and one mouth they returned 518 thanks and praise to God their Saviour. However, first, all enemies 519 had to be placed beneath Christ's feet (Heb. 2:8). The destruction 520 of Jerusalem and the civil wars and commotions among the Romans 521 following the death of Nero Caesar represent the subjugation of 522 Christ's enemies and his entrance upon his eternal reign and
523 kingdom.
