They also call him doorman, keeper, goalie, 226bouncer or netminder, but he could just as well be called martyr, 227pay-all, penitent or punching bag. They say where he walks, the grass 228never grows. 229
-- Eduardo Galeano, Soccer in Sun and Shadow 230
231 232
233The soccer goalkeeper is one of the most important players on the 234field - they are the last line of defense and the first line of attack. 235To play the position well requires special skills and training. 236 237
238To many coaches, though, soccer goalkeeping techniques and tactics are a 239mystery. This is especially true at younger age levels, where often 240coaches have not played much soccer at all, much less played keeper. 241Even experienced field players and coaches may not have much experience 242with goalkeeping. 243 244
This site is designed to help soccer coaches 245coach their goalkeepers. It outlines and demonstrates 246basic soccer goalkeeping techniques and tactics, and also touches on 247the psychology of goalkeeping and provides a primer on goalkeeping 248equipment. 249 250
251Techniques and tactics will be outlined, along with 252pictures to clearly show the subject. For some techniques, a movie 253is worth a thousand pictures, so look for the movie icon 254() to indicate a video clip. 255You will need 256Quicktime to view 257some of these. There will also 258be coaching tips to help get the ideas across to players (look for 259the symbol), and pointers
260to common mistakes to watch for (look for 261). These coaching points and mistakes 262will also be summarized at the bottom of each section. 263 264
265I hope this site will help soccer coaches be more effective in working 266with their goalkeepers and understanding the ins and outs of the position. 267 268
269
270
<IMG SRC=pics/gktechniques.gif ALT="Goalkeeping Techniques" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=40 271BORDER=0>
272
273 274
Soccer goalkeeping technique is focused on the mechanics of catching the 275ball, or at least deflecting it around the goal. Footwork is the key, 276because if a keeper's feet can't get them to where the ball is going, 277their hands will be useless. Catching is important, since sloppy 278catching technique can allow the ball to slip through the hands and into 279the net. Proper positioning allows the keeper to cover the largest 280portion of the goal possible, but occasionally a desperate diving 281attempt must be made to catch or deflect difficult shots. Finally, 282remember the goalkeeper is the last line of defense and the first line 283of attack - a keeper has to know the best way to get the ball to their 284teammates after the save has been made. 285 286
287These techniques are presented roughly in the order they should be taught. 288You can certainly teach them in any order, but earlier topics like 289footwork are the basis for later topics and advanced techniques will 290be much more difficult for a keeper without sound fundamentals. 291 292
293Goalkeeping is about safety - half is the safety of the goal; the other 294half is the safety of the goalkeeper. Proper goalkeeping technique is 295critical not only to keep the ball out of the net, but to keep the 296goalkeeper from getting injured. A good technical goalkeeper is 297safe in more ways than one, thus the importance of instilling good 298habits early. A poor technical keeper is a danger to their team and 299to themselves, so teach them well! 300 301
302 303
304
<IMG SRC=pics/gktactics.gif ALT="Goalkeeping Tactics" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=40 305BORDER=0>
306
307 308
309The soccer goalkeeper, more than anyone else on the soccer field, must be able to 310make split-second decisions that will affect the outcome of the game. 311This section will touch on some 312of the decisions a keeper will be faced with and the factors that 313should enter into their decision. 314 315
316
317
<IMG SRC=pics/pks_t.jpg ALT="Penalty Kicks" 318WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=40 BORDER=0>
319
320 321
322Goalkeepers are often nervous about penalty kicks, but the pressure is 323really on the shooter. Saving penalties is an art, not a science, but 324here are some pointers to be a better penalty kick keeper. 325 326
327
328
<IMG SRC=pics/gkpsych.gif ALT="Goalkeeping Psychology" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=40 329BORDER=0>
330
331 332
333Because the margin of error is so thin, goalkeepers must have the mental 334constitution to handle the pressure and shake off mistakes. This section 335outlines some ways for a soccer coach to keep things positive for their 336goalkeepers and help them along even when things aren't going well. 337 338
339
340
<IMG SRC=pics/gkeqpt.gif ALT="Goalkeeping Equipment" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=40 341BORDER=0>
342
343 344
345The Laws of the Game of soccer state only that the goalkeeper must 346wear a color distinguishing them from their teammates. Most goalkeepers also wear gloves and 347other specialized clothes. This section discusses goalkeeper's gear, 348particularly what to look for in goalkeeping gloves and how to take care 349of them. 350 351
352
353
<IMG SRC=pics/lawst.jpg ALT="Laws of the Game" 354WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=40 BORDER=0>
355
356 357
358To play any game, you need to know the rules.
